Four law enforcement officials have been fatally shot and several others were wounded during a police operation in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred when members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were executing an arrest warrant for firearms possession by convicted felons at around 1:30 p.m., according to Chief Johnny Jennings from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).
As officers approached a suspect in the 5000 block of Galway Drive, East Charlotte, they were met with gunfire. The police returned fire and struck the assailant who later died outside his home. When CMPD officials entered the residence to apprehend another individual suspected of firing at them from inside, officers encountered further resistance resulting in an extended standoff before successfully clearing the premises.
Jennings confirmed that three members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force lost their lives during this operation and eight law enforcement officials were injured overall; one CMPD officer is currently fighting for his life at a nearby hospital, but tragically succumbed to injuries later in the evening according to an official statement from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force comprises various law enforcement agencies including officers of CMPD and is currently being led by them during this investigation into the events that transpired at Galway Drive on Monday afternoon. Governor Roy Cooper (Democrat-NC) expressed his condolences, offering state resources to help as required; Republican candidates for governor in North Carolina also conveyed their sympathies alongside Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd.
In light of this tragic event, Chief Jennings emphasized the inherent risks that law enforcement officials face when they put on uniform every single day as members’ well-being becomes indeterminable until the end of their shift.
