HERO-BLUE: The Innovative Biomimetic Robot Transforming Underwater Exploration and Maintenance

Meet HERO-BLUE, an innovative robot that’s set to revolutionize underwater exploration and maintenance. Unlike traditional remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), which rely on electric thrusters with limitations such as getting clogged or struggling against strong currents, HERO-BLUE boasts a unique biomimetic design inspired by nature. Measuring 31.5 inches by 23.6 inches by 11.8 inches and weighing 24.9 pounds, this experimental device is equipped with four multimodal fins made of polymer panels connected by elastomer tendons that enable it to swim or walk depending on the environment’s demands. In shallow waters where swimming isn’t feasible due to strong currents, HERO-BLUE’s salamander-inspired spine allows it to wriggle forward, making progress in challenging conditions possible. This proof-of-concept robot developed by Taesik Kim and his team at South Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology is poised to transform underwater exploration with its stereoscopic vision that could lead the charge for autonomous operations in the future. As we delve deeper into our oceans’ uncharted waters, robots like HERO-BLUE will be at the forefront, navigating sensitive or protected marine areas while raising critical ethical considerations around their deployment.
