Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is working hard to maintain former President Donald Trump’s support as he tries to prevent a potential rebellion by his right flank within the House. Despite repeated expressions of approval from Trump, some conservative members are dissatisfied with deals that Johnson has made in recent weeks. To avoid any unnecessary controversy, Johnson reached out to the ex-President for help and recently traveled to Mar-a-Lago at Trump’s invitation ostensibly to discuss election integrity issues but also as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) threatened a removal vote against him. During this meeting, Trump voiced his support for Johnson and warned that removing the Speaker would be counterproductive. In addition, Johnson has utilized campaign season strategically; he is set to attend an upcoming Palm Beach retreat featuring former President Trump as its keynote speaker. Last week’s GOP debate on a foreign intelligence program saw similar involvement when Scott took up duties from the indisposed Truman, and in response to Republican concerns over Ukraine aid funding, Johnson made some concessions that satisfied both sides of this political divide by incorporating provisions recommended by Trump. Ultimately, the goal here is not only winning the necessary support but also preventing further backlash for those compromises as well as one on 2024 spending which have angered hard-liners in recent weeks. Johnson’s outreach to former President Donald Trump has provided him with significant political capital within his party, allowing him some degree of freedom regarding issues where other GOP representatives were once wary due mainly to his relationship and dealings with the ex-President.
Democrats have also expressed their support for keeping Johnson in office. This is largely because he played a crucial role in passing Ukraine aid critical to President Joe Biden’s foreign policy agenda, which was met with skepticism by many House Republicans due mainly to Trump’s opposition towards Russia’s war efforts. However, the former president ultimately decided not to oppose this bill after Johnson accommodated his request for turning part of it into a forgivable loan.
Johnson has been working hard behind-the-scenes to prevent any further mutiny by House Republicans who are unhappy with some recent deals he made in Congress. While Greene and two other lawmakers have co-sponsored her motion calling on Johnson’s removal, so far she hasn’t acted upon it due mainly to the loyalty that many of these conservatives still harbor towards Trump.
Trump has repeatedly voiced his support for Mike Johnson as speaker despite the challenges posed by some hardline Republicans. This endorsement could help keep House rebels in line and further bolster Johnson’s position within Congress, especially given how thin the current majority is – just one vote separates them from a potential deadlock.
Johnson’s efforts to stay on Trump’s good side have not been without apparent stumbles. He drew criticism after his Mar-a-Lago visit when he declared that “he and Donald Trump are 100% united” regarding Ukraine, FISA legislation issues amongst others which raised eyebrows in Trumpworld.
His spokesperson issued a clarifying statement later stating that Johnson never meant to suggest complete alignment with the former President on all these critical agenda items. This gaffe underscores how difficult it is for House leaders trying hard not to rile up the ex-President, who still wields significant influence over his party.
Johnson’s relationship with Trump contrasts sharply with that of Kevin McCarthy (R), former Speaker. In February this year when Mc Carthy attempted ascendancy in Congress, Trump leaned on House rebels to help him achieve the goal but remained relatively quiet during a rebellion nine months later which ousted him.
Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) led that mutiny against McCarthy. Even then, he implied with glee that former President Donald Trump supported this move.
McCarthy’s efforts to build close ties with the ex-President by making a controversial trip down Mar-a-Lago after the Jan 6 riot failed spectacularly as it was viewed negatively within his party. His inability to expunge Trump’s two impeachments were also black marks, according to The Washington Post.
Johnson seems determined not to repeat McCarthy’s mistakes and is endorsing former President Donald Trump three weeks after assuming the Speakership position while he has made election integrity a legislative priority. Johnson announced legislation at Mar-a-Lago designed explicitly for addressing ex-President Donald Trump’s allegation that millions of non-citizens voted in 2020’s presidential elections.
As former President Donald Trump continues to wield significant influence over the GOP, it is clear that House leaders like Mike Johnson will continue working hard behind the scenes to maintain his support and avoid any unnecessary controversy.
