Letlow Honors Late Husband, Residents Create New Town in Louisiana while Addressing Education Concerns

Representative-elect Dr. Julia Letlow discusses her victory and pays tribute to her late husband who lost his life due to COVID-19 last year in an interview with reporters recently. Meanwhile, residents of Baton Rouge have succeeded in their legal battle to create a new town called St. George after the Louisiana Supreme Court gave its approval for it. Andrew Murrell, one of the leaders behind this movement, stated that “this is the culmination of citizens exercising their constitutional rights” and urged both supporters and opponents alike to join hands as they work towards building a better city from scratch. He further revealed his plans to create a school district in St. George with an aim to improve educational outcomes for its residents. Murrell acknowledged that this will require two distinct leadership structures – one for the city itself, separate to any school-district structure. The New York Times had previously criticized opponents of the legal establishment behind St. George as being concerned over a “wealthy White community trying to distance themselves from Black and poorer residents in Baton Rouge”. However, Mayor Sharon Broome has pledged her commitment towards serving all communities including those living within St. George’s boundaries despite originally opposing its creation. The local NAACP chapter released an official statement on Monday criticizing the new town for posing significant risks to their education system and challenging community representation.
