Raheem Morris, first-year head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, has drawn comparisons to NFL power couple Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. This comes after Morris’ decision alongside General Manager Terry Fontenot to select Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr in the draft’s opening round sparked widespread interest and discussion within football circles. While some questioned the pick, with Kirk Cousins already signed on a four-year contract worth $180 million ($100m guaranteed), Morris defended it by stating that he was happy for it to be “the story of the draft” as people are drawn to what they want to see in headlines and social media. He explained: “[What’s] Travis Kelce’s girlfriend’s name? I’m Taylor Swift and Terry is Kelce [making something popular], we’re doing our job right now.” However, while Morris and Fontenot have gained notoriety for their decision to pick Penix, unlike Kelce-Swift whose popularity comes from massive success, it arises mainly due to confusion among experts that has resulted in many surprised by the selection. Agent Mike McCartney of Kirk Cousins even admitted they had “no idea this was coming” and that nobody knew about Falcons’ intentions as none brought up during conversations with them ahead of time. Nevertheless, ultimately Penix’s future rests on whether his pick would prove successful or not for the team in question.
