The New York Police Department (NYPD) shared an update regarding the recent string of violent robberies that have occurred in Central Park on Tuesday morning. In response to four separate incidents reported between Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon inside the park, the NYPD has increased the number of officers patrolling within Central Park, extended deployments outside the park’s boundaries, and escalated camera surveillance.
So far this year, a total of 18 robberies have been recorded in the area with electronics being identified as primary targets by officials. The heightened patrol efforts come amidst reports of assaults and robberies occurring within Central Park over the last week, resulting in individuals being injured following unexpected attacks without any prior provocation; some involved attackers hitting victims in their head with either a rock or hammer outside typical bustling spots that the public tends to throng at odd times during midnight. Fox5 New York reported on two such incidents where Michael Stuhlbarg and an unidentified woman were both targeted, leading officials from the NYPD’s Transit Bureau, Chief of Manhattan Detectives William Aubrey, Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence & Counter-Terrorism John Miller to address concerns regarding safety in Central Park.
The recent incidents have raised questions about public security and law enforcement resources aimed at tackling similar instances prompting local politicians and citizens’ associations representing district boundaries neighboring Central park urgently call for stricter precautionary measures with added surveillance cameras, lighting installations as well as hiring more police officers to deter criminal activity in the area.
