Parental Loneliness and the Importance of Social Connections in Child-Rearing

In light of the ongoing loneliness epidemic affecting individuals across demographics, a recent survey by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has revealed that an overwhelming majority (66%) of parents experience feelings of isolation and detachment as a result of child-rearing demands. Conducted among 250 parents aged between 30 and 49 years old, the study sheds light on yet another group frequently overlooked in discussions about loneliness – working parents.

According to Kate Gawlik, an associate clinical professor at The Ohio State University College of Nursing as well as a researcher examining parental burnout, combat strategies for this issue should primarily revolve around fostering social connections rather than dwelling on the challenges associated with child-rearing. “Find a parent group or have a parent-child class where you are going to be seeing the same people over and over again,” she advises parents in an interview with CNBC Make It, adding that consistency is crucial for forming bonds – it’s not just about attending one event but rather showing up repeatedly.

This echoes researcher Perel’s statement during her podcast episode with Dan Harris from Ten percent Happier regarding how more individuals could bond if they adopted the approach of organising last-minute activities since “many people won’t have predetermined engagements three weeks before, but might not be busy on that particular day.”

Despite recognizing their social isolation challenges (79%), many parents feel intimidated to initiate connections. However, Gawlik suggests reaching out to other like-minded individuals and making impromptu plans as people generally enjoy receiving unscheduled calls or invitations from friends. The bottom line: “It’s really about frequency and how often you are seeing people,” she concludes.
