Stefanik Accuses Smith of Trying to Influence 2024 Election Against Trump with DOJ Violations

Fox News correspondent David Spunt provided an update from the Department of Justice regarding special counsel Jack Smith during ‘Special Report.’ House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik has filed an ethics complaint against Smith, accusing him of violating DOJ standards and attempting to tip the 2024 presidential election in favor of former President Trump. In a letter sent to the DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility, Stefanik argued that Smith had breached long-standing Justice Department policy by repeatedly trying to rush his case against Trump to trial before March this year. She also claimed that he violated rules of professional conduct and District Court orders in doing so. The former U.S. Attorney’s petition for a January 2, 2024 trial date was cited as evidence that Smith had attempted to influence the election outcome. Stefanik urged the government watchdog to investigate Smith over accusations he abused his position by trying to unlawfully interfere with the upcoming presidential race. The Supreme Court is currently considering Trump’s claim of immunity, which could significantly delay any trial against him for allegedly attempting to undermine the 2020 election result while in office. A final decision from the court is expected in June, and it seems unlikely that a trial will take place before the presidential election next year.
