United States Remains an Outlier in Global Abortion Policies with Zero Gestational Limits

A new study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute reveals that the United States is among a small group of nations with no restrictions on abortion, allowing terminations at any stage in pregnancy. The research organisation supports bringing unborn babies to full-term and found that out of 193 UN member countries, eight allow ‘on demand’ abortions without limit – including Australia, Canada, China, Guinea-Bissau, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam alongside the US.

The report suggests the United States stands alone among advanced democracies as one of just five western nations – all from the Americas continent, while it shares its liberal policy on abortion with countries like North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Cuba and South Africa. The authors also highlighted that in 10 years there has been no change to this status quo.

In addition, CLI researchers identified the US as one of just fifteen nations within UN circles which permit terminations after fifteen weeks; they asserted there are four European countries (France, Sweden, Iceland and The Netherlands) that allow abortion beyond 15 weeks but none permits it up to birth like America.

Despite several states’ recent restrictions following the landmark US Supreme Court decision in June to end a federal right for abortions after more than forty-nine years – there remain twenty nine which enable terminations past twelve weeks, and some have even expanded their limits; while at least nineteen states provide immunity from legal consequences if abortion pill prescribers deliver pills through the mail.

The report’s authors urged that “the United States should seek to move away from the ultra-permissive fringe policies of the 14 other countries” who permit abortions after fifteen weeks, and instead aim for earlier gestational limits like those adopted by one hundred seventy eight UN member states – ranging between full protection of unborn life and safeguarding it beyond thirteen or fourteen weeks.

The Biden administration has been vocal in its advocacy that abortion services remain readily available through federal healthcare providers including the Department Of Veterans Affairs (VA) and The Department Of Defense, while billions have gone to major US abortion providers like Planned Parenthood – as previously reported by Washington Examiner.
