Fox News reported on May 8, 2022, that House Speaker Mike Johnson introduced a bill called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which aims to prevent non-citizens from voting in US elections. Johnson highlighted the “dangerously high number” of undocumented immigrants who are allegedly able to vote due to the Biden administration’s refusal to close the border. He claimed that if just one out of every hundred non-citizens voted, they would cast hundreds of thousands of votes, potentially influencing the outcomes of close elections. Although Johnson acknowledged that the exact number of non-citizens who have already voted is unknown, he asserted that the new legislation would enable states to verify citizenship before allowing people to vote. Representative Chip Roy also endorsed the proposal, stating that the majority of the American population supports stricter voter identification measures. Former Trump administration officials Stephen Miller and Hogan Gidley, both now employed at the conservative think tank America First Policy Institute, also attended the announcement. Gidley declared that allowing non-citizens to vote constitutes “dangerous lunacy”.
