According to recent reports, the WNBA has announced a $50 million plan to provide full-time charter flight service for its teams over the next two seasons. This move comes amid growing concerns over player safety, particularly for former Iowa star Caitlin Clark, who previously flew charter flights while playing college basketball. Clark expressed initial skepticism about the change, stating that it would be an adjustment, but ultimately acknowledged that it’s a positive development given the league’s increasing popularity. Last year, the WNBA spent $4 million on charter flights for playoff and back-to-back games, and Commissioner Cathy Engelbert confirmed that this practice would continue this season. However, ongoing concerns over safety on commercial flights led the league to explore alternative options, ultimately resulting in the decision to charter flights for all teams starting as soon as possible. The new policy will enable players to use private air terminals and avoid layovers, which is particularly important given the upcoming Olympic schedule. Players such as New York Liberty stars Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones expressed enthusiasm for the change, noting the added convenience and potential for improved performance. Although the league has previously allowed charter flights under specific circumstances, such as back-to-back games, playoff matches, and the Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game, the lack of financial resources has historically prevented regular charter flights. However, with the league’s continued growth, it seems that charter flights are becoming increasingly feasible. As Clark put it, “Everybody has to navigate it, and I think it’s going to cause some problems, maybe, because the popularity of our league is continuing to grow and having to navigate travel with that. But, at the same time, that’s a positive thing, too. You want people to be excited about our game.” With charter flights set to become standard practice for the foreseeable future, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the league’s finances and overall trajectory. Nonetheless, it’s clear that charter flights represent a significant step forward for the WNBA, providing greater safety, comfort, and convenience for its athletes.
