Bette Midler expressed regret about her short-lived sitcom, titled “Bette,” which she referred to as a “big, big mistake.” The actress and singer revealed during an interview with David Duchovny on his podcast, “Fail Better,” that she wished she had taken legal action after Lindsay Lohan departed from the show following the pilot episode 24 years ago. Midler explained that the situation was highly unusual, as Lohan, who was a teenager at the time, left unexpectedly or had other priorities. She mentioned that she felt overwhelmed by the chaos that ensued and stated that it was incredibly astonishing. Midler also shared that she believes the show would have succeeded if she had received more support from her team.
During the podcast, Duchovny brought up the fact that actors are expected to honor their commitments, and Midler agreed, stating that she should have stood up and taken legal action, saying that she could have prevented it all. Midler further elaborated that the series was in its eighteenth episode, and she was relieved not to have to proceed since she could not find a way to succeed. She also added that the show’s pace was very taxing, and she didn’t know how to manage it.
On another occasion, while appearing on David Letterman’s talk show during the show’s short run, Midler declared that it was the worst experience of her life. Midler revealed that she was dismissed the following day, and her lawyer called to inform her of the decision at around 9 am. Lindsay Lohan, who was around thirteen or fourteen years old at the time, appeared in “Bette” before quitting the program. In recent times, Lohan, now thirty-seven, has made a comeback in films including “Falling for Christmas,” released in 2022.
Midler, who is seventy-eight years old, disclosed that her greatest downfall was acting rashly and without delay. The show, “Bette,” which premiered in 2000 and lasted eighteen episodes until 2001 on CBS, left Midler dissatisfied. Midler also voiced her frustration regarding the termination of her production firm following the show’s cancellation.
In a recent Throwback Thursday post on Instagram, Lohan shared pictures of herself with Midler during the show’s shoot. Lohan wrote in her caption that she had a great time working alongside Midler, whom she described as extraordinary. Lohan was a child actor renowned for her roles in films like “The Parent Trap” and “Freaky Friday” prior to experiencing difficulties due to personal issues. She has lately begun making a comeback in movies, starting with “Falling for Christmas” in 2022.
