In a significant decision, the Dallas City Council is poised to sanction a substantial amount of funds, estimated to be several hundred thousand dollars, to welcome the emergence of a fresh professional sports team to the esteemed Cotton Bowl arena. This development was publicly announced by the authorities during a recent council meeting held in Dallas. It should be noted that the forthcoming USL Super League, slated to commence in August, will be the primary beneficiary of this financial backing.
Despite the USL Super League’s nascent nature, the league’s impending North Texas branch has garnered widespread interest from local politicians and sports enthusiasts alike. During the same meeting, various prominent figures, including Gerardo Sanches, the Director of Visit Dallas, and Monica Paul, the Executive Director of the Dallas Sports Commission, expressed their delight regarding the City Council’s decision to bring a women’s professional soccer squad to the Cotton Bowl. They further emphasized the significance of promoting women’s sports and praised Dallas’ position as a pioneer in this field, citing instances such as hosting the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 2023 and the ongoing Athletes Unlimited tournament at Fair Park.
The specifics concerning the league’s North Texas franchise, namely its name and home ground, have not yet been disclosed, but the relevant authorities have hinted at these critical details during the meeting. The resolution authorizing the expenditure comprises a yearly subsidy, capped at $296,000, granted to Oak View Group, a company specialized in developing locations for live events.
Mayor Eric Johnson expressed his elation regarding this initiative, asserting that this move constitutes yet another exhilarating development for sports fanatics residing in Dallas. He also highlighted that the Cotton Bowl, which opened in 1930 and is currently undergoing a $140 million refurbishment, has previously hosted soccer matches, including those organized during the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Earlier this year, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami side also competed against FC Dallas at the venue.
The USL Super League’s debut season is scheduled to take place in August, and the organization intends to reveal additional crucial details relating to its North Texas branch, such as the team’s official name, emblem, and other pertinent aspects, at an event scheduled for May 12 at Klyde Warren Park in Dallas.
