In a shocking turn of events, Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter and close confidant of MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani, has admitted to committing financial wrongdoings. According to the US Department of Justice, Mizuhara has agreed to plead guilty to charges of bank fraud and filing a false income tax return in relation to the transfer of almost $17 million from Ohtani’s personal bank account without his consent. This theft reportedly occurred between late 2021 and early 2024, during which time Mizuhara utilized Ohtani’s login credentials and altered the security protocols without Ohtani’s awareness. On roughly 24 occasions, Mizuhara contacted the bank and posed as Ohtani to gain access to his account. Authorities claim that Mizuhara used the funds to repay his significant gambling debts, which were accumulated via illicit bookmaking operations. As per CNN’s request for comment, Mizuhara’s legal representative has not replied. Notably, Ohtani, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been identified by prosecutors as a victim in this situation and has not been implicated in any wrongdoings.
