The recent controversy involving Princeton University adjunct professor Morgan Jerkins has come under scrutiny for her blatantly racist remarks directed towards white individuals who expressed opinions on the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar rap feud. Jerkins, who is also a popular author, singled out white YouTube personality DJ Vlad, claiming that the “black folk affair” did not concern white people like him. Vlad’s comments regarding Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss track were unremarkable, but Jerkins deemed them enough to warrant her scathing criticism.
In response, Jerkins alleged that Vlad used his “white privilege” to threaten her employment at Princeton University. She claimed that by tagging her employer multiple times, Vlad intended to inflict professional harm upon her. Jerkins further asserted that Vlad’s actions were an example of white supremacy against Black women, and she received support from prominent figures such as BET commentator Marc Lamont Hill, who accused Vlad of weaponizing his “power and privilege” against her.
Vlad subsequently apologized, acknowledging that Jerkins’ stance on the matter did not warrant a response so severe. However, Jerkins’ initial comment was undeniably bigoted, promoting cultural divisions based solely on skin color. Her views are particularly troubling given her past role as a creative writing instructor at Princeton University, where she is expected to return in the fall.
The incident raises important questions regarding Princeton University’s responsibility to its students and faculty members. It is unclear whether the institution intends to address Jerkins’ behavior, which seems to prioritize race above academic merit. It is also unknown whether the university’s student body and their families, who pay exorbitant tuition fees, are aware of Jerkins’ sentiments towards white individuals.
This situation echoes another hypothetical scenario that would result in immediate termination for a white professor expressing similar views regarding Black individuals. Jerkins’ conduct demonstrates excused racism, the notion that it is acceptable to racially discriminate against individuals of historically oppressed backgrounds. Princeton University ought to be ashamed for permitting someone with such prejudiced ideas to educate its esteemed student body.
Princeton University has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding the matter. We anticipate a response in due course.
