In New York City during the summer of 2022, Trevon Murphy committed a series of brutal stabbing attacks against homeless individuals. On July 5, Murphy killed a man who was sleeping on a bench in Hudson River Park, followed by two more attempted murders on July 9 and July 11. Each victim was stabbed repeatedly in the lower abdomen, as Murphy referred to this as his preferred method of attack. Murphy was eventually arrested on July 13, 2022, and found to be carrying a knife at the time of his apprehension. Prior to these attacks, Murphy also assaulted a homeless person staying in a Queens shelter in April 2022. The district attorney, Alvin Bragg, has emphasized that homeless individuals in New York City should not have to live in constant fear for their safety. Following Murphy’s guilty plea in January 2022, he received a sentence of 25 years to life in prison for his heinous crimes. While this sentence cannot undo the pain caused to the victims and their loved ones, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg expressed hope that it would provide some measure of closure and comfort.
