In the past week, there has been a notable increase in the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits, reaching its highest point in over eight months. According to data released by the Labor Department on Thursday, the number of claims rose by 22,000 to 231,000 during the week ending May 4, surpassing the previous week’s figure of 209,000. This is the highest level seen since the end of August 2023. The four-week moving average, which helps to mitigate weekly fluctuations, also saw an increase, rising by 4,750 to reach 215,000. As of the week ending April 27, a total of 1.79 million Americans were receiving jobless benefits, representing an uptick of 17,000 from the prior week. These figures suggest that the labor market could be softening, as weekly unemployment claims are regarded as a gauge of future employment trends and have generally remained at historically low levels since the spring of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic triggered widespread layoffs.
