In a call with CNN, Paul Whelan expressed optimism about US efforts to secure his release from Russian custody, stating that he had received assurances from high-ranking officials that they are doing everything possible to free him and fellow detainee Evan Gershkovich. While acknowledging concerns that the recent arrest of a US soldier in Russia could complicate matters, Whelan noted that there have been several proposals put forward by the Biden administration to the Russians for their release. He highlighted that the situation has been particularly challenging due to the fact that negotiations have started afresh each time a new individual has been detained, including Trevor Reed and Brittney Griner. However, despite his initial despair in December, Whelan reported that ongoing negotiations and proposals have given him hope, and he remains confident that a resolution is close at hand. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken with Whelan on multiple occasions, most recently in February, while the State Department continues to maintain that Whelan’s imprisonment is a top priority, urging Russia to release him immediately.
