A new television series titled “The Joy of Painting with Nicholas Hankins: Bob Ross’ Unfinished Season” is now airing, featuring certified Bob Ross instructor Nicholas Hankins recreating previously unseen paintings by the late artist. Before Ross passed away from cancer in 1995, he had completed seven additional episodes for season 32 of his popular show “The Joy of Painting”, but they remained untouched for nearly three decades until now. Hankins, who teaches at the Bob Ross Art Workshop and Gallery and manages instructor certification, uses these seven unreleased paintings as the basis for his new series, which premiered this spring on American Public Television and is currently available to stream on PBS’ website. Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross, Inc., which her parents founded with Ross, expressed pride in the production and noted that Ross would have approved of the project, as he was committed to continuing the show even while battling illness. The series has gained popularity during the pandemic, as people seek out ways to unwind and relax amidst the chaos of daily life. With viewership increasing and distractions mounting, Hankins hopes that his 30-minute episodes will continue to provide a peaceful escape for audiences. In order to fully immerse oneself in the experience, Hankins recommends having basic painting supplies like oil colors, an easel, canvas, and brushes, but for simple viewing pleasure, all one needs is a tall glass of iced tea, as Bob Ross himself famously recommended.
