Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy expressed concern for the Biden administration ahead of the upcoming elections, following a massive rally organized by former President Donald Trump in New Jersey, which is considered a historically deep blue state. McCarthy, who appeared on “Sunday Morning Futures,” stated that the size of the crowd at the rally – estimated to be between 80,000 and 100,000 people – was unprecedented for New Jersey, and questioned whether President Biden could gather such a significant number of people in the most Democratic states or in Washington, D.C. McCarthy further added that Biden’s recent handling of the war in the Middle East and his need to campaign less due to his tendency to make mistakes while speaking were major concerns. He went on to state that Trump’s rally demonstrated that the former president was unaffected by any challenges thrown his way and was determined to fight for the nation’s leadership.
Meanwhile, McCarthy emphasized the importance of unity among Republicans ahead of the general election in November, stating that when Republicans stick together, they can achieve anything. He criticized those Republicans who supported a motion to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson over his handling of government funding and foreign aid, stating that it was wrong and urged Republicans to focus on issues that Americans cared about. McCarthy suggested that Republicans could pass both Ukraine and border issues simultaneously, as they did last year.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who attempted to oust Johnson from his position using a motion to vacate the chair, accused Johnson of being “owned by the Democrats” during her own appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures.” She claimed that Democrats were responsible for saving Johnson, rather than Republicans, and pointed out that Nancy Pelosi and Jerry Nadler voted to save Johnson, despite being vocal opponents of Trump. Greene alleged that Johnson was beholden to the Democrats, even though he frequently visits Trump at Mar-a-Lago.
The rally in New Jersey came at a critical moment for Trump, who is currently facing multiple criminal charges in four different cases, despite denying all accusations. Supporters at the rally claimed that border security and the economy were their principal concerns, and some expressed confidence that New Jersey could swing Republican in the upcoming elections. Trump himself declared that his party would win the state of New Jersey, predicting that they would win all the states in the process.
