In addition to the recent charges against three individuals accused of collaborating with the Hong Kong intelligence service in the UK, Leon Panetta, a former US politician, has raised concerns about a proposed electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan potentially being utilized for Chinese espionage. These revelations come as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak prepares to deliver a speech warning of increasing dangers stemming from an “axis of authoritarian states” such as Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. Last year, tensions between the UK and China escalated following the arrest of a parliamentary researcher on spy charges, which Chinese officials dismissed as a malicious slander. Hong Kong’s authorities failed to respond to requests for comment regarding the present situation. The UK government implemented a new national security law last year to counteract the “continually evolving” threat of foreign interference, which was necessary in response to the perceived danger posed by hostile activities directed toward the country’s democracy, economy, and values. Eleven individuals, including the aforementioned trio, were apprehended by UK counterterrorism forces using provisions of the new law permitting detention without warrant. The remaining eight suspects were subsequently discharged without charge. The case is still ongoing.
