Democrats Revive Failed Border Bill as Immigration Becomes Election Issue in Swing States

In light of former President Trump’s rising popularity in crucial swing states ahead of the 2024 election, Democrats are considering reviving a failed border bill that fell short due to opposition from conservatives, including Trump himself. According to reports, Senate Democrats aim to push for the legislation in the coming months, giving Republicans the option to cooperate or risk voting against it. The proposal comes as illegal immigration continues to escalate under President Biden’s leadership, causing major issues for voters in the upcoming election. With border security becoming a major concern for voters, Democrats are hoping to address the issue by strengthening border protection and implementing new immigration policies. During a recent C-SPAN interview, Congresswoman Susan Wild, a vulnerable Democrat representing Pennsylvania’s 7th District, appeared to shift her stance on immigration, calling for stricter border security measures after previously dismissing the idea of a border wall as “silly”. As the 2024 election season approaches, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has identified Wild as one of many Democrats facing an uphill battle due to Republican challenges. With migration, inflation, and the economy topping the list of voter concerns, including in Pennsylvania, Wild’s recent op-ed calling for action on the border crisis marks a noticeable turnaround in her previous rhetoric on immigration. While Wild has voted for increased funding for border protection and called for the passage of a bipartisan border deal, she has faced criticism from Republicans who argue that she has never voted to secure the border. With Pennsylvania set to play a significant role in the upcoming election, Wild will face off against Republican opponent Ryan Mackenzie, who has accused Biden and Wild of destroying the country with wide-open borders and skyrocketing inflation.
