The Oceanside Fire Department is currently battling a fire that broke out at an empty restaurant located at the end of the iconic 2,000-foot-long wooden pier in North County San Diego on Thursday afternoon. The pier was built back in 1888 and serves as a prominent landmark for the beachside town not too far from Camp Pendleton. Authorities are requesting people to keep away from the area due to the ongoing firefighting efforts.
Footage of the blaze shows thick plumes of smoke billowing up above the pier, which is visible even in areas as distant as Vista and Del Mar. The flames seem to have spread towards Brine Box, a fish shack situated at the end of the pier. In response to this unfortunate incident, the restaurant posted an update on social media stating that their team has safely evacuated from the area, adding that they will keep everyone updated about any further developments as and when available.
The U.S Coast Guard is working alongside firefighters in combating the blaze while helicopter drops are being made by both Diego County Sheriff’s Department and San Diego Gas & Electric to put out the flames from above. The cause of this unfortunate incident has not been officially disclosed yet, but there have been no reports regarding any potential injuries so far either.
