After finally breaking free from the 14-year long conservatorship that controlled every aspect of her life and finances in November 2021, it’s unclear whether Britney Spears will return to making music. However, as announced by his lawyer Mathew Rosengart last week (March 9), she has settled the legal dispute over Jamie Spears’, her estranged father’s, request for financial reimbursement relating to court-mandated audits during their time together under conservatorship. The details of this settlement have not been disclosed publicly.
Rosengart praised Britney’s “remarkable success” since the termination of her legal arrangement last year, noting that such achievements would never have occurred while she was still under guardianship. Her collaborative single with Elton John titled ‘Hold Me Closer’, released in August 2021 and reaching number one on iTunes shortly after its release, not only earned the first-place slot at Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart but also became her twenty-fourth top ten single. In July of this year (2023), she released ‘Mind Your Business’ with Will.i.am and was credited as a co-writer for the track.
Spears has furthered her career through publishing “The Woman in Me”, an autobiography that debuted at number one on The New York Times bestseller list after selling over 1 million copies within its first week of release, published by Simon & Schuster last October (2023). Rosengart expressed his gratitude for being able to help restore Britney’s civil rights and liberties throughout their time together working as her lawyer. He emphasised that all the legal matters she resolved since leaving conservatorship were due entirely to Spears’ wise instructions, which he commended highly.
In a statement released by Rosengart last week (March 9), he stated: “Although the conservatorship was terminated in November of 2021, her wish for freedom is now truly complete,” further emphasising that Britney’s long-held desire to avoid legal proceedings relating to this case has also been realised. Rosengart concluded by stating that Spears had won when Jamie’s suspension occurred and that she ultimately prevailed over the restoration of all fundamental rights and civil liberties during her conservatorship period.
