Cher’s Controversial Rock Hall Induction Despite Criticism

CLEVELAND – Cher has been announced as one of this year’s inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame despite previous remarks criticising the organization during a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. As revealed by Clarkson back in December, Cher expressed her frustration at being overlooked for induction and even suggested that she wouldn’t accept if offered an astronomical sum to join its ranks. “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars,” the singer told Clarkson. “I’m not kidding you… I’m never going to change my mind.” Cher also commented that she believed her 1998 hit ‘Believe’, which is credited as being one of music history’s first uses of autotune, changed the course of popular music forever. However, it seems the singer has not yet publicly responded to this year’s induction news. To be eligible for inclusion in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, artists must have released their debut commercial recording at least 25 years before being nominated. This year’s nominees were selected by a panel of more than one thousand musicians, historians and music industry professionals who voted alongside five candidates chosen via fan vote on the museum’s website or in-person polling stations. Cher was joined this time around by Foreigner, Dave Matthews Band and Kool & The Gang – all first-time nominees. Other artists that missed out included Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sinéad O’Connor (who passed away last month), soul pop star Sade as well as alternative rock bands Jane’s Addiction and Britpoppers Oasis. Previous inductees who have rejected their invitation to join the Hall of Fame include The Sex Pistols back in 2006, according to Far Out Magazine. Cher will be officially inducted alongside her fellow honourees at a ceremony scheduled for October 19th at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. It is set to stream live on Disney+ with an ABC broadcast and Hulu availability following its initial airing.
