FORT WORTH, Texas – An inmate passed away following a violent confrontation at Tarrant County jail. The 31-year-old man was apprehended by law enforcement officers from Saginaw on Friday after reportedly threatening an individual with a knife. Alongside this offense, he was being held for other crimes that include possession of controlled substances, tampering with evidence, and evading arrest.
During routine checks to prevent contraband at the jail early Sunday morning, officials claimed that the inmate refused to leave his cell. Corrections officers then used pepper spray on him as he began fighting them. One officer sustained injuries during this altercation according to reports from Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO). The prisoner was being attended by medical staff when he reportedly lost consciousness. Staff members at the jail immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him, and he was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment where later, as confirmed in TCSO’s announcement yesterday, it was disclosed that the prisoner had passed away.
Sheriff Bill Waybourn of Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office has asked Texas Rangers to carry out an investigation into this incident while medical examiners are working on determining the exact cause of death for the inmate whose name is yet to be revealed by authorities.
