Ezekiel Elliott returns to Cowboys after seven seasons with deal pending physical

Dallas Cowboys reportedly reached an agreement to bring back running back Ezekiel Elliott after seven years with the team. The NFL Network first broke the news that a deal was finalized, pending a physical examination. Following his departure from Dallas at the start of last season, Elliott joined the New England Patriots and played in all 17 games for them, accumulating 642 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 184 carries. Speculations regarding potential contract negotiations between Elliott and Cowboys emerged prior to this year’s NFL Draft; however, Dallas did not select any running backs during the draft, further fueling rumors of a possible reunion with their former star player.

The signing comes at an interesting time for the Cowboys as they have had a relatively quiet offseason despite team owner Jerry Jones claiming that his organization is “all in.” Elliott’s return could be seen as one of Dallas’ biggest acquisitions outside of linebacker Eric Kendricks, who also joined their ranks. The backfield currently consists of Royce Freeman and Rico Dowdle with Tony Pollard now playing for the Tennessee Titans instead.

The Cowboys originally picked Elliott with the fourth overall pick in 2016’s NFL Draft, where he immediately made an impact by rushing for a remarkable 1,631 yards and scoring fifteen touchdowns during his rookie season alone. He would go on to exceed the thousand-yard mark three more times before parting ways with Dallas last year. Over the course of his career spanning one hundred twenty games so far, Elliott has accumulated a total of 8,904 rushing yards and seventy-one touchdowns.
