Nearly 200 passengers aboard U.S.-based cruise ships experienced diarrhea and vomiting as a result of norovirus outbreaks in April, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess ship reported an infection rate among its 2,532 passengers at almost 4% during the current voyage that began on April 5. A total of 94 people fell ill while another 20 crew members also contracted norovirus aboard the vessel. The Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas ship reported an infection rate among its 1,993 passengers at just over 3% during a voyage that commenced on April 8 and concluded on April 22. Both ships experienced symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting associated with norovirus outbreaks. Princess Cruises stated in response to FOX Television Stations’ request for comment, “At the first sign of an increase in passengers reporting gastrointestinal illnesses, we immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitization procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus.” The cruise line added that it implements disinfection measures and isolates sick individuals while communicating steps travelers can take to prevent infection. Royal Caribbean International did not respond promptly when asked for comment by FOX Television Stations, but according to CDC’s notice, the company took several actions in response to the outbreak such as separating infected passengers and crew members from healthy ones along with heightened cleaning procedures. The CDC notes that cruise ships pose a risk of illness due to high volumes of people being exposed to new environments through contaminated food or water, although norovirus transmission usually occurs via person-to-person contact. Travelers who feel unwell before embarking on their voyage are advised by the agency to report symptoms and inquire about alternative cruising options from cruise lines if possible. Passengers should also practice frequent hand washing as well as restful sleep and adequate hydration while aboard ships, according to CDC’s recommendations for preventing illnesses during a trip.
