Humza Yousaf, currently serving as first minister for just over one year, tendered his resignation on Monday due to several poorly thought-out progressive policies culminating in the demise of his governing alliance. As Scotland’s initial Muslim leader of a Western democracy, Yousaf admitted that repairing political relations would require another person at helm following his decision to terminate an agreement between Scottish National Party (SNP) and Green Party known as Bute House Agreement, which cost him the working majority. The green coalition leaders also charged his choice to abstain from agreements was a “spectacular breach of trust.”
Yousaf’s resignation comes after a vote of no confidence called for this week following his decision to halt an agreement between SNP and Green Party over climate change policy disagreements, which led Douglas Ross, leader of the Scottish Conservatives who submitted the motion, assert that Yousaf was “forced…out of office” due to repeatedly failing Scotland. Furthermore, the author mentioned other debated laws initiated during his leadership like those related to changing gender and transgender identity being made a protected characteristic under hate crime legislation. The article also touched on Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation as party leader following an investigation into alleged misuse of campaign funds by her husband Peter Murrell, who was charged with embezzlement earlier this month while she herself faced questioning last year but denied any wrongdoing.
