LOS ANGELES – Over 2,000 hazardous and unsafe baby products valued at approximately $80,00 were seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the port of LA in January and February alone. Four separate shipments originating from China were intercepted during this period.
The CBP confiscated 96 baby walkers, 216 autism balance chairs, 492 changing tables for babies, 196 step stools designed specifically for children, as well as 1,296 alphabet mystery box toys that failed to meet U.S. child safety standards.
According to the CBP authorities, some of these products did not possess essential certificates or labels required by law such as consumer registrations and tracking labels while others violated specific CPSC laws concerning their use by babies or kids like balance chairs do since they potentially increase risk-taking activities leading into Autism disorders. Additionally, baby changing tables failed to conform with safety standards for baby changers along with missing product registration cards required in law under Consumer Registration (16 CFR part 1504), Product Safety Requirement labels [see (CFR 287 Sec110), ASTM International- American Society Testing and Materials Publications and Standards] while step stools designed for babies were missing children’s product certificates as well as tracking label requirements. The toys, on the other hand, failed to meet small parts requirement laws under Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA).
CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles Cheryl Davies stated that CBP is committed towards preventing illicit importation activities for products not conforming with U.S safety standards since they pose potential hazards and risks to children, who are considered as the most vulnerable consumer base due their lack of developmental understanding or awareness regarding product usage and safety requirements.”
