When the Kentucky Derby celebrates its 150th edition on May 4 next year, there will be a noticeable absence from one of horse racing’s most esteemed trainers – Bob Baffert. Although his horses have won an unprecedented six editions of this renowned event, he is set to miss the Run for the Roses for a third consecutive time in May 2024 as well due to recent punishment by Churchill Downs Inc., which has extended his suspension by another year beyond its original expiration date.
In contrast with what would usually happen during a period where there have been no failed drug tests or medication violations involving Baffert’s horses, the additional penalty was imposed last July because of Medina Spirit’s disqualification from the 2021 Kentucky Derby following an adverse finding in post-race testing. The three-year old colt tested positive for a banned substance that is not allowed on race day under state rules; however, this drug was considered legal by California authorities who regulate horse racing there.
As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Baffert’s suspension means none of his horses will be able to collect Kentucky Derby qualifying points which determine the 20-horse field for America’s premier classic event next year as well. Nevertheless, despite being prevented from competing in this prestigious race again, he still managed to win another Triple Crown leg at Pimlico Race Course last May with National Treasure – his seventeenth victory across these three historic races that form the heart of American horse racing’s most famous series for three-year old Thoroughbred colts and fillies.
Adding to this accomplishment, in addition to the winner’s share from Preakness Stakes 2023, Baffert also earned over $12 million last year after his horses collected several graded stakes across all parts of the world for turf track running surface at different distances. Unfortunately, one of these victorious equines had to be euthanized due to injuries sustained during a race on an undercard event in Baltimore earlier this month.
Despite being banned from competing his horses in Kentucky Derby and its associated races next year, Baffert still has 18 nominations for the Triple Crown series which includes both Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course (May 20) as well as Belmont Park’s Grade One $1.5 million mile-and-a-half race on June 9, 2024 – otherwise known as The Test of the Champion.
The renowned trainer from Arizona will return to Kentucky Derby in two years time; until then, his absence may create an exciting opportunity for other talented trainers and their horses at Churchill Downs during this year’s Run for the Roses on May 5th next weekend when all eyes turn once again towards horse racing’s most celebrated spectacle.
