When the 150th Kentucky Derby takes place on May 4 this year, it will have a different look as Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will be missing from the event’s famed horse racing extravaganza for the third consecutive time. Known for his record-tying six victories in the prestigious race, Baffert won’t feature any contenders this year either despite earning a fortune – around $12.6 million- winning another major trophy at Preakness last year with National Treasure. The suspension imposed by Churchill Downs Inc., which was supposed to end last year but extended for an extra term, is the reason behind Baffert’s absence from this year’s Derby as well. Although there have been no positive drug or medication tests involving his horses during that time frame, Churchill Downs levied a two-year suspension on him in July 2023 due to Medina Spirit’s failed post-race drug test following the horse’s win at Kentucky Derby last year. The legal medicine found in Medina Spirit’s system is not allowed for use on race day as per the state laws of Kentucky, resulting in his disqualification from the event. As a result, Baffert’s horses have been prevented from collecting qualifying points to secure their spots at Derby since then, causing him an unintended miss this year again despite nominating 18 contenders for Triple Crown series events like Preakness and Belmont in June next year.
