Billy Vunipola fined, ordered compensation after nightclub arrest in Mallorca

England rugby player Billy Vunipola has been fined €240 and ordered to pay compensation of €500 following an express trial after being found guilty of serious disobedience towards authority and resistance of arrest at a nightclub in Mallorca, according to the Balearic Islands Superior Court of Justice.
Vunipola admitted that he failed to follow police orders when they entered the club due to reports of a fight. The court document also revealed that Vunipola resisted officers as they attempted to subdue him, resulting in injury to their wrist and hand. He will not serve his suspended four-month prison sentence because it is less than two years and he has no prior criminal record in Spain.
In a statement released by the Spanish National Police in Mallorca, Vunipola was identified as being involved in an “unfortunate misunderstanding” that escalated while leaving the nightclub on Sunday morning. He denied any involvement of violence or fighting with bottles or chairs and apologised for his actions, stating that he had not threatened anyone at any stage during the incident.
Saracens, Vunipola’s English club side, said they would deal internally with the matter before making further comment on the issue. The 31-year-old last played for England in their Rugby World Cup campaign earlier this year and came off the bench to help Saracens beat Bath 15-12 during a Premiership game at the weekend.
