EF-4 Tornado Devastates Marietta, OK: Over 200 Injured, Dozens of Buildings Destroyed

A powerful tornado with winds reaching up to 170 mph ripped through Marietta, Oklahoma last Saturday evening as part of an outbreak that left four people dead across the state and over a hundred injured. The National Weather Service has since classified this particular twister as an EF-4, making it one of the most destructive tornadoes to hit the area in recent history. In Marietta alone, at least 40 homes, businesses, and government buildings have been damaged or destroyed by the storm’s fury; while reports state that at nearby Holdenville up to two individuals were confirmed dead as a result of another EF-rated tornado touching down there.

The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management has revealed that around 100 injuries had also occurred across various locations in response to the storm’s aftermath, with some victims being treated for cuts and bruises sustained from flying debris or collapsing structures. A baby was among those who lost their lives during this catastrophic event as Hughes County Emergency Management Director Mike Dockrey confirmed that a child had perished due to one of the tornadoes’ impacts in Holdenville, Oklahoma.

The National Weather Service has also reported that at least 22 twisters hit different parts of Oklahoma during this recent outbreak; with three particularly potent ones leaving their mark on towns such as Marietta and Sulphur. Semi-tractor trailers were lifted into the air by the ferocious winds, causing heavy damage to vehicles nearby while several people fled inside a Brody’s Roadies gas station for safety during the storm’s height in Marietta. Sara Rose, who owns this very same establishment, relayed how customers scrambled and stayed on their property grounds at the garage due to concerns regarding driver welfare amidst these intense conditions that persisted through Friday evening into Saturday morning hours.

The cleanup process is now underway, where recovery has come forward after having become vitalized through one significant feature of this experience – people from various backgrounds working together in times of adversity. The store manager at a nearby establishment expressed her gratitude for the community’s unity amidst their collective pain; acknowledging how many shoppers stayed with truck drivers and other affected individuals who did not have any place to go after experiencing such traumatic events firsthand during this catastrophic outbreak that has left its mark on Oklahoma.

As cleanup efforts continue, electrical crews are working around the clock in an attempt to restore power across Highway 77; while Garrett Tarver captured footage of the destruction caused by these tornadoes’ path as it crossed through Sulphur earlier this week (Friday). The residents affected by this storm have shown remarkable resilience, with Amber Czismy from Marietta remarking that despite how rapidly everything happened during Saturday evening’s events – she remains hopeful and grateful for the fact that her husband is still alive along with their two dogs. Although she laments having to begin again following such a harrowing experience, Ms Czisnmy feels privileged that at least everyone survived relatively unscathed in light of these tornadoes’ intense force; revealing how their 19-year old cat miraculously remained alive and well despite the storm’s ferocity as they opened up the door to reveal a house gone entirely.
