Phoenix-based fashion designer Sarah Abdullah, an alumna of Arizona State University (ASU), has created a dress for Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, the only Tony Awards voting member in Arizona. The gown will make its debut on the red carpet at this year’s Tonys ceremony scheduled to take place on June 16th in New York City. Abdullah overcame several obstacles including suffering a stroke while studying at ASU last December, leaving her unable to speak or walk for some time and forcing her to relearn everything from sewing to fashion design during her senior year of college. Jennings-Roggensack selected Abdullah because she found more than just a stunning outfit -she appreciated the designer’s heart and courage in overcoming adversity, which resonated with her three-point print that hits “gut,” “heart” and “head.” Now fully recovered from her stroke, Abdullah says she is grateful for this remarkable experience after everything she has been through.
