Rare White Killer Whale Calf Spotted Off Coast Of California By Boat Company

In a video shared by boating company, Newport Coastal Adventure (@NewportCoastalAdventure) and its sister account, NewportWhales (@NewportWhales), passengers can be seen watching with amazement as pods of killer whales glide near and beneath their boat off the coast of Newport Beach in California. The rare sighting occurred on April 29 during one of the company’s morning cruises led by Captain Dani Fasser (@NewportCoastalAdventure). One particularly unique orca, a white killer whale calf named Frosty, was spotted among them. At four years old and with its rare genetic condition that causes lighter pigmentation than most killers whales, it’s only the second time Newport Landing and Davey’s Locker Whale Watching (@NewportWhales) has seen this elusive orca in a year. The pod was feeding on an unidentified animal while passing around beach-ball sized chunks, according to Jessica Roam, education and communications manager at the whale watching company. This is just one of few sightings along California’s coastline; their last reported spotting occurred in Morro Bay back in October 2022. Newport Landing and Davey’s Locker Whale Watching operate daily tours out of the harbor in Newport Beach, where they aim to educate visitors about marine life while providing an unforgettable experience at sea.
