The Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley has issued an apology video after a traffic stop incident last week during which she allegedly acted inappropriately towards the police officer. In her opening remarks, Doorley acknowledged that she failed to meet expectations and standards due to work stress and personal medical concerns of her husband. She admitted that what happened was wrong with no excuses made, taking full responsibility for her actions.
Doorley further explained that at the time of the incident, she had just left work where three homicides occurred over the weekend, which added to her already high stress levels. Additionally, Doorley’s husband received a frightening medical concern earlier in the day, adding more pressure on an already challenging situation for her.
Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) called for an investigation into Doorley and referred her to the New York State Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct after viewing police body cam footage of the incident. In a statement released by Governor Hochul, she criticized Doorley’s behavior as acting in contravention of her responsibility and undermining her ability to hold others accountable for violating the law.
Doorley acknowledged that District Attorneys are responsible for prosecuting criminal and traffic offenses while maintaining high ethical standards. She further stated that if one of her assistant district attorneys had acted similarly, she would have disciplined them herself. Doorley vowed to discipline herself by taking ethics training as a reminder that professionalism matters following the incident’s humbling experience for her.
It remains unclear what punishment Doorley will face from this matter; however, in her video statement, she apologized again to the police officer involved and pledged to make things right.
