Pitcher Max Scherzer, who is currently recovering from back surgery with the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, has proposed an idea to hold underperforming umpires accountable in Major League Baseball (MLB). The three-time Cy Young award winner suggested that the league should rank umps based on their performance using electronic strike zones and relegate those who fall into the bottom 10% to minor leagues. Scherzer’s proposal comes at a time when fans have expressed frustration over some umpires’ poor calls, with Angel Hernandez being particularly notorious for missing balls and strikes consistently without any consequences from MLB. The Rangers star is due to return in the summer as he enters his second year of a three-year $130 million contract at age 40. During an interview with Dallas Morning News, Scherzer also shared that while recovering, physically, he felt good after completing over 50 pitches during his rehab assignment in Triple A. Fans can share their thoughts on whether MLB should implement a similar system for umpires by sending messages to alejandro.avila@outkick.com or following along with Alejandro Avila’s social media account @alejandroaveela.
