During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Politico politics bureau chief and senior political columnist Jonathan Martin expressed concern that if President Joe Biden debates former President Donald Trump, it could expose the current president negatively during a national televised event. This sentiment was echoed by Jen Psaki, who served as Biden’s previous press secretary on the same panel but did not explicitly contradict this suggestion either. Despite suggesting previously to interview host Howard Stern that he would “happily” debate Trump, Martin argued that if Biden debates his predecessor, it could indicate a need for him to gain or regain ground in order to win the election. Psaki implied that rejecting an offer to participate in such events may not be beneficial either as saying ‘no’ can come across as weak and fearful. The panelists agreed that if Biden does debate Trump, this decision could serve as a sign of his campaign needing to make up some ground, whereas if both decide on taking part then negotiations for logistical matters will need to follow through next. Welker further elaborated that the conflict in Gaza would undoubtedly be an essential topic during any potential debates between Biden and Trump due to its current relevance across college campuses nationwide. PBS News Hour co-host Geoff Bennett suggested that while young people are actively protesting against the ongoing humanitarian crisis, it is economic issues such as high living costs which will have a greater impact on their voting decisions during this election cycle. This poses challenges for Biden in maintaining his broad coalition of voters with differing views and concerns.
