In a video shared by boating company, Newport Coastal Adventure (@newportcoastaladventure) and its sister account, NewportWhales (@Newportwhales), passengers can be seen watching with amazement as pods of killer whales cruise near and beneath their boat off the coast of Newport Beach in California. The rare sighting occurred on April 29 during a morning whale-watching tour organized by catamaran operator, Catallac (@Catcallacom), who boasts to have been the first company to spot these famous orcas nine miles from the shoreline. Amongst them was Frosty, an albino killer whale calf aged four years old that is unique due to a genetic condition causing its pigmentation to be much lighter than most of its kind. The last time Newport Landing and Davey’s Locker Whale Watching (@newportwhales) spotted the white orca was in April 2019, making this sighting particularly special for passengers on board who were thrilled at seeing them once more after so long a while. As noted by education manager, Jessica Roam of Newport Landing and Davey’s Locker Whale Watching (@newportwhales), the pod was feeding on an unknown animal’s beach-ball sized chunks which they passed back and forth to each other. This sighting is incredibly rare as killer whale spottings off southern California are scarce; a reminder of why people venture out into these waters in search of such magnificent creatures that can only be described as “awe inspiring.” The pod has been previously spotted all the way up north, near British Columbia and was last reported sighted at Morro Bay back in October 2019. Newport Landing and Davey’s Locker Whale Watching operate daily whale-watching tours out of their harbor located within Newport Beach, California.
