Kamala Harris Evades TikTok Question as ‘Mamala’ Controversy Erupts

The Vice President Kamala Harris avoided answering a question about the Biden-Harris campaign’s usage of TikTok despite national security concerns regarding the app, raised by the incoming administration. During an interview with Drew Barrymore on her talk show on Monday, she was instead asked whether she could be dubbed “Mamala” for the country due to a need for comfort and support in these times. Harris laughed at this suggestion as well, which has been widely mocked on social media by political commentators who claimed that nobody wanted Kamala Harris to take over motherly duties from actual parents across America. The exchange between Barrymore and Harris was criticized by Brigitte Gabriel, the chairperson of ACT for America, stating that Drew Barrymore was trying to gaslight people into wanting a surrogate parent in Harris instead of an elected leader who could make decisions on their own. In response to criticism levied at this event via Twitter X’s CEO Nick Ferguson stated: “It is unfortunate how political commentary has turned into childish insult-fests, but we will continue providing a platform for all voices”. Harris also spoke about the importance of understanding one’s power and not letting anyone take it away during her interview with Barrymore. She further discussed her laugh which she said people still need to get used to as they are unfamiliar with female leadership in politics. The host, Drew Barrymore herself complimented Harris’ laughter by stating that she loved the vice president’s unique chuckle. This event sparked discussions on social media regarding the state of political discourse and how it has turned into an arena for petty insults instead of focusing solely on policies or leadership qualities. The discussion between Barrymore and Harris drew comparisons with Fox News host Will Cain’s observations who stated that Joe Biden was being referred to as “Father of Country” while Kamala Harris is called “Momala”. Canadian professor Gad Saad also commented, asking whether a society could become so infantile that such an exchange would be considered compelling.
