A new poll has revealed that almost two-thirds of Americans believe illegal immigration is a real crisis, with 51% supporting mass deportations. The survey by Axios and The Harris Poll found that the issue remains top of mind for voters ahead of this year’s midterm elections, as Democrats split evenly (42%) in favour of such measures alongside independents (46%) and Republicans (68%). President Biden is seen to be most responsible for the border crisis by 32%, with efforts to shift blame onto former president Donald Trump unlikely to work. The poll also highlighted concerns over increased crime rates, drugs, violence and a risk of terrorism and national security as key issues surrounding immigration. Republicans have criticised Biden’s rhetoric on the issue, accusing him of owning the problem despite calling for bipartisan border reform earlier this year.
