GM Discontinues Iconic Chevrolet Malibu Sedan, Shifts Focus to Electric Models and SUVs

As per the latest developments, General Motors (GM), the renowned automobile manufacturer based in Detroit, has announced its decision to discontinue the production of its iconic Chevrolet Malibu sedan. This decision comes as part of GM’s plan to renovate the manufacturing facility in Kansas, where the Malibu is currently produced, in order to produce the upcoming electric Chevrolet Bolt model instead. The company is scheduled to halt the production of Malibu by November this year.

This move aligns with GM’s recent shift towards building more crossovers and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) instead of cars. With this decision, the Malibu becomes the only remaining Chevrolet car model available in the US market, besides the popular Corvette. Since its debut over six decades ago, the Malibu has witnessed remarkable sales figures, with more than 10 million units being sold worldwide thus far.

The announcement comes at a time when the automotive industry is witnessing a significant trend towards electric vehicles (EVs). GM has been actively working towards expanding its EV portfolio, including the recently launched Cadillac Lyriq and the upcoming Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle. By investing heavily in EV technology, GM aims to position itself as a leader in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Notably, this decision contradicts earlier projections made by GM executives regarding the Malibu’s future. In 2018, Mary Barra, the CEO of GM, expressed confidence in the continued popularity of sedans like the Malibu, stating that they remain “a critical part” of GM’s product lineup. However, the declining demand for traditional sedans, coupled with the increasing preference for EVs and SUVs, seems to have led to this change in strategy.

As the world continues to grapple with the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, this decision might come as a surprise to some. Nevertheless, it highlights the growing importance of EVs and the need for automakers to adapt quickly to meet the changing demands of consumers. With the Malibu’s discontinuation, GM joins a growing list of major automakers, including Ford and Toyota, who have already announced similar moves. These developments suggest that the era of traditional sedans may be coming to an end, as the automotive industry embraces the future of electric mobility.
