In addition to learning the Bob Ross method of painting, a new series called “The Joy of Painting with Nicholas Hankins: Bob Ross’ Unfinished Season” is providing viewers with a chance to see seven previously unseen paintings created by Ross before his death in 1995 due to cancer. These works were kept hidden for almost three decades until certified Bob Ross instructor Nicholas Hankins studied them and recreated them on camera for the show. The series, which began airing this spring on American Public Television, allows Ross fans to continue learning from his teachings while also helping to fulfill his wish to share these final projects with the world. As the demand for Bob Ross content increased during the pandemic, Hankins hopes that his 30-minute episodes will provide viewers with a relaxing escape, similar to the original “Joy of Painting” shows. Hankins, who teaches at the Bob Ross Art Workshop and Gallery in Florida, also incorporates six of his own paintings into the series, which was filmed and produced at WDSC-TV Daytona State College. The series has received positive feedback online, with viewers appreciating Hankins’ natural style despite not attempting to mimic Ross’s approach. Viewers can watch some episodes on PBS’ website or check local listings for broadcast times. To follow along, basic supplies such as oil colors, an easel, canvas, and brushes are required, although simply enjoying the show with a tall glass of iced tea is also recommended, as this was Ross’ preferred viewing experience.
