During her upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm will focus on advancing “climate cooperation” and expanding renewable energy initiatives. The visit, scheduled from May 11 to May 13, will mark Granholm’s first time traveling to the region since assuming her current position. According to Biden administration officials, the trip aims to build upon existing collaborations between the U.S. And these nations, particularly regarding efforts to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable economic development. Specifically, Granholm intends to attend a gathering of the Net-Zero Producers Forum, a coalition comprising 40% of worldwide oil and gas production, which includes the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. This forum is dedicated to exploring strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, notably methane abatement and the introduction of renewable energy sources. Notably, the agenda for the conference, set to take place during Granholm’s visit, has been planned well in advance, and she will not be discussing oil policy with local officials during her stay. Furthermore, sources close to the matter have revealed that negotiations between the Biden administration and Saudi Arabia are nearing completion regarding U.S. Security guarantees and civilian nuclear support, despite delays in the implementation of a broader accord involving Israel and Saudi Arabia. However, progress toward this regional pact, initially proposed as a component of a broader Middle Eastern peace proposal, has yet to materialize. The discussions on this subject are being handled by senior representatives from both the White House and the State Department rather than Granholm.
