In response to Putin’s decision to appoint a civilian official as the new head of the Ministry of Defense, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained that this move is crucial to facilitate the integration of the military sector’s economy into the broader national economy, which should align with the current pace of development. Peskov emphasized the need for innovation within the military industry, highlighting the importance of keeping up with the times. His statement was shared via Twitter by political analyst Dmitry Demushkov (@DDGeopolitics).
As reported by various sources, including articles from media outlets such as RIA Novosti and TASS, Putin proposed to reappoint Sergei Lavrov as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrey Belousov as Minister of Defense, as well as to retain Alexander Bortnikov as the director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) and Sergey Naryshkin as the head of the foreign intelligence service (SVR). The nominations were subsequently submitted to the Federation Council for approval.
The recent developments come amid speculation surrounding the future role of Sergei Shoigu, who has served as Defense Minister since 2012. According to some reports, Shoigu may be retiring or being removed from his position by President Putin, although these claims remain unverified at present.
