The reigning Super Bowl champions just became even more formidable with a significant draft move less than three months after securing their second consecutive title. The Kansas City Chiefs addressed a pressing need by trading up during Thursday’s opening round of the NFL Draft to bring on Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who boasts an astonishing 40-yard dash time that broke all previous records at the recent NFL Scouting Combine with a blistering speed of 4.21 seconds.
Despite Patrick Mahomes’ team reaching peak form towards the end of last season, Kansas City struggled to find reliable pass catchers as no player surpassed the 1000-yard receiving mark (Travis Kelce managed 984 yards in two missed games). However, this situation has now been rectified with Worthy’s arrival.
Worthy’s remarkable speed could offset any concerns about his small frame of just 160 pounds and previous drop issues as he looks to make an immediate impact for the Chiefs. The Texas alum put up impressive stats during his third and final college season, racking up a career-best 75 receptions for 1014 yards. In total, Worthy recorded 197 catches for 2755 yards and an outstanding 26 touchdowns in the course of his collegiate campaign.
Reacting to seeing the impressive new addition’s lightning-fast speed at the NFL Combine, Mahomes expressed amazement with a series of emojis on social media after Worthy broke the previous record he himself had set during last year’s event (4.25 seconds). The Chiefs are undoubtedly hoping that they will enjoy another memorable run following this recent upgrade to their ranks ahead of the 2021 season commencing next week Thursday against Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s Dolphins at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
