Democrats have expressed more reservations about President Joe Biden than Republicans did about former President Donald Trump, according to an NBC News poll. The survey found that only 54% of Democrats said “none” of the president’s vulnerabilities were most convincing compared to 72% of Republicans who felt similarly about Trump. Additionally, a higher percentage (42%) of Democrats stated there was a compelling reason to vote against Biden as opposed to just 25% for Trump among Republicans.
The poll also revealed that all registered voters ranked Biden’s vulnerabilities more highly than those associated with Trump when asked the most convincing reasons to oppose each president. When queried about Biden, 23% of respondents cited his “may not have the necessary mental and physical health to be President for a second term” as their top reason for voting against him; this figure was lower but still substantial (20%) when voters were asked what they found most compelling in relation to Trump’s alleged wrongdoing, including multiple felony charges related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
Biden’s next two reasons cited by respondents as being convincing against him – his handling of the border and inflation – earned 17% and 16%, respectively; another 15% stated that “all” were most compelling for them.
For Trump, in contrast, just two vulnerabilities rated particularly high. One, pertaining to Biden’s selection process of Supreme Court judges was mentioned by only 14% respondents, and the second related specifically to plans aimed at pardoning individuals accused as being partakers or participants of events which took place on January 6th; this issue received a lower rating from voters (8%) than did any other vulnerability associated with Biden.
The NBC News poll surveyed one thousand registered voters between April 12-16, and the margin for error was plus/minus three percentage points.
