Rewritten Article: Former Michigan Wolverines quarterback JJ McCarthy has recently switched teams and is now a part of the Minnesota Vikings. This means that he will be spending significant time in what’s known as “The State of Hockey.” Interestingly enough, hockey was actually McCarthy’s first love growing up; he began playing at just five years old. However, around freshman year of high school, he had to make a difficult decision between continuing with his passion for ice hockey or pursuing football instead.
Despite having to retire from competitive play earlier than expected, McCarthy has held onto his Hockey Guy credibility over the years. This was evident when Wayne Gretzky, one of history’s most renowned Hockey Guys, called him after being drafted by the Vikings on Friday. Unfortunately for McCarthy, he happened to be in the middle of a Zoom press conference at that exact moment. As such, he had no choice but to politely acknowledge Gretzky and continue answering questions from the media instead of engaging in conversation with The Great One himself.
It’s safe to say that most people wouldn’t have shown McCarthy-like composure and restraint in that particular circumstance; I know for a fact that if Wayne called me during an interview, my laptop would be flying off the desk faster than you could say “Gretzky.” However, there are many reasons why such an outcome is unlikely to happen any time soon. For starters, McCarthy has already achieved remarkable success as both a National Championship-winning quarterback and first-round NFL draft pick (something that I can’t claim just yet).
All things considered, it would be fantastic if McCarthy was able to finish his press obligations promptly so he could finally chat with Wayne. Here’s hoping the next time The Great One calls him up is outside of a Zoom meeting!
