Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a potential challenger to former President Donald Trump’s bid for the White House, has come under heavy criticism from his ex-boss. In an explosive post on Truth Social, Trump accused RFK Jr of being “a Democrat ‘plant’” and suggested that President Joe Biden might be preferable over him in November’s election.
Trump claimed Kennedy was put forward to take protest votes away from the former president, describing his record as that of a “Radical Left Liberal who’s been put in place” to help defeat Trump again. He went on to list several reasons why he believed voters should not support RFK Jr’s campaign – highlighting its financing by San Francisco lawyer Nicole Shanahan and attacking Kennedy’s stance on gun rights, the environment, taxes, immigration and military spending as being too left-wing for Republicans.
Trump also criticised Kennedy’s environmental policies in New York state which he said had led to “Environmental moves that were outright NASTY”. He then turned his ire towards California Governor Gavin Newsom – whom Trump has largely refrained from openly attacking due to their warm relationship during the former president’s administration.
Trump claimed Kennedy’s views on vaccines, which he described as “fake”, represented everything that was wrong with RFK Jr’s campaign and urged voters not to support him in November’s election – saying: “Let the Democrats have RFK Jr. They deserve him!” The campaigns of both Biden and Trump have gone after Kennedy, accusing him of being a spoiler candidate. Some political analysts aren’t sure as to whether he would take more votes away from either contender given his eclectic platform which has differing appeals for the progressive base that supports Biden and those who voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Other potential third-party challengers this year include left wing academic Cornell West and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
